  • Arethusa and the River God

    July 6th, 2026
All I thought I wanted was the hunt.
    The first time I could,
    I drove the deer.
    Every time I could,
    I drove the boar.

    The lovely river drew me.
    I didn’t know it housed a god,
    or maybe I did.
I’d read about such things in books.

    I damn them both now—
    desire, fear.

    The blood on my hands,
    my spear
    had to go somewhere.

I rode to the rocky banks,
    waded deep into words
    I told the world
    I shunned.

    Desire. Lover. Men.
    The rush, the thrill!

    I visited the Temple.
    Checked out the Goddess’s
    how to books.

    I thwarted the God!
    I dove into words.
    He plunged in after me.
    Followed where no mortal could.

One night the ink rippled gently.
    Words he whispered.
    Turn the wheel.
    Drive in.
    Oblivion will love you forever.

    A Nubile can’t fight
the lust of the River God.
    But somehow I managed.
    Now I’m a spring
    running dry on the page.
